Best of 2011: Have Nots "Proud"
Nobody thought it would be possible for Have Nots to give the instant classic “Serf City USA” a proper follow-up. The young band exploded onto the Boston scene with their ska infused punk debut back in 2009, with the album sitting high atop many “Best of ‘09” countdowns. This past year the young band looked to pick up right where they left off, but this time around...

Best of 2011: The World Inferno Friendship Society...
My first shot at a “Best of 2011” (shorter) review is World/Inferno’s newest record which, if I was doing some sort of arbitrary ranking system like everyone else, would probably sit at number one. After some major lineup changes, most notably the sad departure of long-time guitarist Lucky Strano, some were worried about the Brooklyn-based cabaret punk troupe. Enter “The...

Review: Star Fucking Hipsters "From The Dumpster...
Initially slated to be called “Ska Fucking Hipsters”, Scott Sturgeon’s (Stza’s) latest crack rock steady project emerges from the gutter with a more ska driven record powered by a newly revamped lineup. While the group’s 2009 release Never Rest In Peace dragged through brooding mid-tempos and a handful of brutal metal tunes, Dumpster brings forth a band of refreshed crust punks tearing through...

Dave Mcwane Makes Full Recovery
unsignedunleashed:
Big D And The Kids Table frontman, David McWane was recently diagnosed with throat cancer which forced the band to drop tour dates throughout the winter as he underwent surgery. We’re happy to say that a recent post from the band confirms that the surgery has been successful and he is now free of cancer.

Punknews Interviews The Ever-Mysterious Andrew WK →
In one of Punknews’ more bizarre interviews, they talk to man who knows how to party hard, Andrew W.K. I know so little about Andrew WK, he does have a sweet club in Chinatown though!

“Like A Shotgun” by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
A new song off of their brand new record Magic of Youth which comes out December 6th! Already thinking this is going to top their 2009 record Pin Points and Gin Joints, just by the Pay Attention/Let’s Face It vibe I’m getting. This could be a last second addition for my album of the year list.

"The Other F Word": A Documentary About Punk Rock... →
“The Other F Word” in the NY Times. A new documentary detailing famous punks and their life as…fathers? Yep, this film features everyone from Fat Mike from NOFX, Lars from Rancid, Greg Hetson from Bad Religion, and so many more. Even Flea from the Chili Peppers is in there! Check out this clip involving Fat Mike in a bath robe…

Screaming Females on Audiotree Live! →
Check out this link to see the New Brunswick,NJ natives Screaming Females play a quick set in super fantastic awesome studio high quality! Also they answer some questions about the New Brunswick garage scene that everyone seems to rave about, Edgar Winter, Marissa soloing too much, and a whole lot more. And that DJ guy thanks them for coming out at least 85 different times…

New Reviews, Segments, and Other Clever Stuff
I know I know, I’ve tried to reboot this damn blog a million and one times now. But now that I’m a certified Journalism Student…or something, I’m going to give this another serious go. My current plan is: stick pretty close with the genres I’ve been reviewing so far, i.e. punk, ska, folk, folk-punk, punk-folk, ska-punk, punk-ska, and polka. So we’re looking at...

Review: "Castle Talk"- Screaming Females
My first interaction with Screaming Females involved a strawberry themed party outside of my college library. The NYU Strawberry Festival. Some guy dressed as a strawberry was stage diving as I stared confusedly at what was transpiring onstage. At the time I dismissed the New Brunswick, NJ group as being “too weird” or “trying too hard to be weird” or some sort of...

"Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes"- Social Distortion
Through a series of shenanigans involving a time machine, Mike Ness had been warped to 1934 and decided to write a record or something. So that’s why it took so long to come out after years and years of teasers! It all makes sense now. Seriously, someone needs to nudge Mike and let him know its 2011, the recession kind of ended a while back now. As I’m typing this 80’s punks are sending me...

Coming Soon: "Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes"
My next review will be the long awaited and eternally delayed Social Distortion album, “Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes”. Yes people we’re talking about the Duke Nukem Forever of punk records! So it better be good right?…right. Stay tuned for that in the coming week.

Review: "Chamberlain Waits"- The Menzingers
While “Cavalcade” was my pretty much my top album of 2010, I certainly did not forget about “The Menzingers” contribution this year. With their second release, the Scranton, Pennsylvania folk punk outfit really came out with something special this time. Like “Cavalcade”, “Chamberlain Waits” (2010,Red Scare) was precisely what we all needed in the punk rock scene. The whole record has this...

First review finally DONE!
Yay I actually posted something for once! Look for my review of The Menzinger’s “Chamberlain Waits” sometime this week hopefully. Now I just need a name for this whole thingy…I think for now I’ll stick with Still Under Construction, it’s ironic…or something. Any suggestions for a name world of tumbling people? I really have no idea what I’m doing so...

Review: "Cavalcade"- The Flatliners
After their second album entitled “The Great Awake” (2007, Fat Wreck Chords) was met with some polarizing opinions, The Flatliners needed an album like “Cavalcade”. Although their second release had some incredibly powerful moments and catchy hooks, some were complaining about the band straying away from the abrasive ska-punk grime sound that dominated their first release “Destroy To...

Selling Out
Well this is it, I sold out and made one of these new fangled tumbly blog things. I’ll be using this mostly to review shows I go to, and assorted albums I feel like talking about for the week. Most of the time these will be of the punk and/or ska variety, but I’m willing to go out of that realm and maybe try my hand at something more well known. Hopefully I’ll actually stick to...
